A study recently released by the Commonwealth Fund reports that approximately 25 million adult Americans below the age of 65 were seriously under-insured. According to the study, roughly one in five adult Americans had health insurance without sufficiently comprehensive coverage to protect them from the high cost of emergency medical care.
While being under-insured is not the same as being totally uninsured, researchers say that, in practice, the difference is uncomfortably small. Under-insured people are less likely to fill needed prescriptions, undergo preventative tests for disease, or seek medical attention even when seriously ill. In some ways, the under-insured are no better off than the 50 million Americans with no coverage at all.
The new figures show a steady rise in the number of under-insured Americans, up from 16 million in 2003, the first year the Commonwealth Fund study was conducted. The study authors attributed the trend in part to the rising cost of healthcare, which has hit unsuspecting middle-class families especially hard.
