A coalition of four Texas interest groups has issued a call to reform the Texas health insurance market in order to make private and small group health insurance policies more affordable for the average Texan.
Four organizations – the Texas Public Interest Research Group, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), Texas Impact, and the Texas Legal Services Center – are calling for an expansion of the review of the Texas Department of Insurance currently being conducted by the Texas Sunset Advisory Commission in hopes that it will spur lawmakers to take action against prohibitively high private Texas health insurance costs.
Among the proposals the groups have put forward: Texas ought to join over a dozen other states which allow sole proprietors and self-employed people buy in the small group health insurance market.
The groups plan to hold at least eight town hall meetings around the state to garner support and open dialogue about the situation.
