In 2008, approximately 1 in 7 Americans were lacking health insurance coverage. Around 43.8 million Americans did not have insurance as compared to 43.1 million in 2007. According to the Secretary of Health and Human Services, unemployment is largely to blame.
Statistics show that 17% of the population under 65 lacked health insurance last year. Texas and Florida had the highest rates of uninsured with about 1 in 4 people lacking health insurance. Massachusetts had the lowest rate of uninsured with only 3.4% of people lacking insurance.
